Liberal Studies

Learner-Centered Learning

At the UI&U Undergraduate Program, your education is about you, not us. With the guidance of faculty during our residency process, you develop an individualized study plan that fits your personal and professional needs and goals. Rather than repeating learning that has already taken place, you build on what you know and follow your interests and passions.

Flexible Options

UI&U's Bachelor of Arts degree fits any lifestyle, no matter how busy. Each option is designed to meet your learning style and personal schedule.

Weekend: If you live regionally, you visit the campus one weekend a month in either Montpelier or Brattleboro, VT.

Cycle: Live anywhere in the country and attend a week-long residency once every six months in Montpelier.

Online: Study entirely from home and participate in our virtual residency through the Virtual Vermont online option. Learners in this option live locally, nationally, and all over the world.

Finish your Degree Faster

Because each semester is worth 15 credits, our learners finish their degrees at the same pace as a full-time learner in a traditional university—even faster! Our transfer credit policy recognizes the value of your past learning, whether it was two weeks or more than 20 years ago. You may transfer up to 75 credits from a variety of sources, such as accredited academic institutions, college-level experiential learning, workshop documentation, military training and CLEP exams. These opportunities for advanced standing may help you earn your degree in as little as 18 months.

Choose Online or Brief Campus Residencies

Whether virtual or on-campus, the residencies offer a rich academic environment where you can interact with faculty and learners, plan your semester’s work, view presentations and share your ideas. By the end, you will have completed your study plan and  chosen a faculty member to work with for the coming semester.

Learn from the Best in Your Field

Each semester, work one-to-one with a faculty mentor who guides you through your chosen area of concentration. Through regular communication, you maintain an ongoing dialogue, present your work, and receive individualized, personal feedback from a faculty member about your program, your progress, and your personal and academic growth.
