Making Links to Online Library Resources

Below are instructions for creating persistent links to articles and e-books in the following online resources.

Why should I link to full text articles?

Creating a link to a full text article will take you straight to the article itself without having to search the database. This is an easy way to direct learners to resources on your syllabus or to return to a specific article in the future.

What is a persistent link?

A persistent link is a stable URL that will always lead you to a specific resource (i.e. article, e-book, database record).

Why can’t I just copy the web address?

The URL that displays in the Web browser address bar when you view a full-text article, for example, is not a stable URL, but one that works only for your current database session.

You must follow the instructions below for creating persistent links to resources in our various databases, which includes adding a proxy prefix that authenticates users via their MyUnion IDs and passwords.

Why do I need to add a proxy prefix to a persistent link?

All persistent links need to have a proxy prefix that authenticates users via their MyUnion IDs and passwords as valid members of the UI&U community. If a proxy prefix is not used, the user will not be authenticated, and access to the database will be denied.

Troubleshooting

If the link you have created is not working, try the following:

  • Copy and paste the entire link into your Web browser instead of clicking on the link directly
  • Make sure that you have copied the entire link. Some links can span more than one line
  • Make sure that there are no spaces in the link
  • For further problems, contact the library
