Online Request Form

Be sure to check the availability of books in the online catalog. If the book is not currently available, you can place a hold. If the book you are seeking is not currently held by Gary Library, please submit an Interlibrary Loan request. To expedite your request, please be sure to include your name and ID# as well as the author, title, and call number of the book(s).

You may also request journal articles from our print periodical collection or learner studies, which are not available in our library databases. The charge for all photocopies is 10 cents a page.

We ship items to you at no cost, but you are responsible for the return shipping to the library. The Gary Library uses various mailing methods in order to best suit our patron:

For patrons residing in New England:  USPS Library Mail (2-9 days)

For patrons residing outside of New England: UPS Ground (7-9 days)

For patrons residing outside of New England who live in apartment buildings or hold P.O. Boxes: Priority Mail (2-4 days).

In order to send your books back, please place them in a clean cardboard box or padded mailing envelope and affix the Gary Library address label that was sent along with your books. Please note: the Gary Library address label is NOT a substitute for full shipping payment. It simply allows you to pay library rates at your local post office. In order to ensure that your books are returned safely, please bring your packages to the post office and have an accurate library rate calculated.

We fully support recycling, but ask that books only be returned in clean, sturdy packages.  A general list of Do’s and Don’ts:

DO

  • Be sure to pay the full shipping costs, and insure your package.  You are responsible for the safe return of mailed library items.
  • Use clean, sturdy packaging. Tape the package well to ensure that the books remain safe. Line your packages with paper, bubble wrap, or plastic bags.
  • Plan your shipping so that your materials are returned to the library on time.
  • Keep the library up to date on all address changes, so that we can be sure to send your materials to the right place.

DON’T

  • Use packaging that smells of food or cigarettes.  These scents transfer to the books.
  • Use packaging that is flimsy or water-damaged.
  • Wrap books in paper bags—they are nearly always torn by the time they reach the library.
  • Send materials in fiber-filled mailers.  The fibers often spill from the lining and stick to the books.

Renewing library materials

Renewals may be requested as long as another borrower has not already placed a hold on any of the items in question. Items on six-month loan may be renewed one time only.

To request any renewals, contact the library via email or phone.

Placing a Hold

If the book you want is checked out, you can ensure that you will be next in line to get it by placing a hold on the item. In the online catalog, books with a status of "on loan" will display a Hold icon to the left of the item's title. Just click on the Hold icon and log into My Account when prompted to place the hold. You may also email or call us so that we can place a hold on the item for you. If an item has a "hold" placed on it, this means that the item may not be renewed.

To find out when the item is due back to the library, scroll down to the bottom of the online catalog record where it displays Copy information. Here you will find the due date information listed.

Your Library Account

You can access your library account by clicking on the “My Account” button in the online catalog. (NOTE: Your MyUnion ID # is BOTH your ID and PASSWORD for the online catalog.) Choose “Checkouts” from the side menu to view your items or “Charges” to view any accumulated fines/charges. For more information, see My Library Account.

Before graduation, you must return all books and pay any accumulated library fines or charges. It is strongly suggested that, prior to graduation, you contact both the Business Office and the Gary Library circulation department to find out if any fines or fees need to be paid prior to graduation.

Replacement Fees

A $50 replacement fee is automatically applied to all books that become 45 days overdue. The $50 fee will be refunded only if (a) the item is returned within 12 months of the due date and (b) our library has not already ordered a replacement copy. Fines will still be owed on lost books.

Items not returned in the condition in which they were sent will be considered damaged, and a $5.00 fee will be added to your account. Please remove all bookmarks before returning library books.
