Announcing Judges for Hunger Mountain's Two Prose Prizes

The fifth annual HOWARD FRANK MOSHER SHORT FICTION PRIZE deadline has been extended to June 15, 2008. The prize awards $1,000.00 and publication. The judge is Katherine Vaz, author of Mariana. For complete guidelines, click here.

Prize Winners Announced

Hunger Mountain is pleased to award the fifth annual RUTH STONE PRIZE IN POETRY to Patricia Hohl of Framingham, Massachusetts, for her poem “Pyre.” The prize is one thousand dollars and publication. Honorable mentions have been awarded to Kathryn Donohue of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for her poem “To a Young Traveler: What Happened” and Elizabeth McLagan of Portland, Oregon, for her poem “This Time, This River.” Winners were selected by Nance VanWinckel.

 

The first annual HUNGER MOUNTAIN CREATIVE NONFICTION PRIZE has been awarded to Andrew D. Cohen of Portland, Oregon, for his work of creative nonfiction titled, “Gambling with the Family.” The prize is one thousand dollars and publication. Honorable mentions have been awarded to Farnoosh Moshiri of Houston, Texas, for her work titled “Walking on Thorns” and Kathleen McGuire of High Shoals, Georgia, for her work titled “Wrecked.” Winners were selected by Sue William Silverman. Hunger Mountain extends thanks to all prize entrants for your continued support.


Hunger Mountain's Spring 2008 Issue, #12

The Spring 2008 Issue of Hunger Mountain, #12, features work selected by Guest Editors Nancy Eimers, Richard Jackson, Pamela Painter and Christopher Noël, plus the winner of the first annual Hunger Mountain Creative Nonfiction Prize, Andrew D. Cohen’s “Gambling with the Family,” selected by Sue William Silverman, and the winner of the fifth annual Ruth Stone Prize in Poetry, Patricia Hohl’s “Pyre” along with honorable mentions Kathryn Donohue’s “To a Young Traveler: What Happened” and Elizabeth McLagan’s “This Time, This River,” selected by Nance Van Winckel. The issue also features several black-and-white photo essays including Emma Norman’s photographs of the Elizabeth Bishop House in Nova Scotia with an introduction by Howard Norman, new fiction by Ron Carlson and Alice Hoffman, the short story “Blind Love” by Rosa Montero translated from the Spanish by Claudia Routon, new poems by Stephen Corey, Sean Thomas Dougherty, Sandra Kohler, Lisa Lewis, Khaled Mattawa, Ata Moharreri,  and Elaine Sexton. Hunger Mountain's Fifth Anniversary Issue (fall 2007, #11), features work selected by Guest Editors Phyllis Barber, Richard Jackson, Ellen Lesser and Natasha Sajé. The issue includes new work from writers Marvin Bell, Gary Fincke, Beckian Goldberg, Robin Hemley, Bob Hicok, Mark Jarman, Randa Jarrar, Shirley Kaufman, Lance Larsen, Sarah Maclay, Sebastian Matthews, John J. The Stinehour Broadside Award

The fourth broadside in the Stinehour Broadside Award series features the poem "Breaking News" by Lucia Perillo. The poem was selected by Board of Advisors member Judith Ortiz Cofer from the Fall 2006 Issue of Hunger Mountain. The Stinehour Broadside Award is an annual award honoring a contributor from the previous year’s issues by printing their work on a letterpress broadside. Selections are chosen by a Hunger Mountain Board of Advisors Member and printed by Stinehour Press, an award-winning book press in Lunenburg, Vermont.
