Assistant Controller
This position will be responsible for the various tasks within the Company’s accounting and finance department. This person’s primary areas of focus will be leading many aspects of the month-end closing process including coordinating and incorporating business unit and foreign financial data and performing the consolidation of the results, managing the accounts payable function and tax compliance function, assisting with the Company’s compliance program for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, working with outside auditors, integration of acquired companies, member of internal financial diligence team for potential acquisitions, finance liaison with the internal IT team and teaming with the Controller and Director of Financial Reporting to ensure compliance with technical accounting issues and SEC reporting requirements. This position will also aid in developing and tracking management reporting systems, cost analysis and budgeting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead monthly closing process for the Life Sciences, Healthcare and Physician segments. Individual will review and post journal entries, review account reconciliations, and work with various parties (business unit leaders, financial planning, Senior Management) to analyze results to ensure that numbers are fairly stated. End result of this work will be production of consolidated financial statements and perform related analysis in the required amount of time.
- Manage accounts payable and tax compliance function for Life Sciences, Healthcare and Physician segments. This includes all accounts payable functions including expense reports, financial analysis, cost savings and travel coordination.
- Work with external auditors. This will involve preparing documents requested by auditors, reviewing work performed by others for external auditors, and serving as a primary contact along with Controller for auditors. Successful completion of this task will result in the auditors signing-off on our results in planned amount of time each quarter and at year-end.
- Assist with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance efforts. This will involve assistance with documenting policies and procedures, ensuring that the controls are being performed, remediation of gaps or exceptions, providing support to internal audit related to testing of controls, and working with internal and/or external parties to assist with other compliance efforts.
- Accounting research and other department initiatives. This will involve researching new accounting standards using research software tools, implementing processes to comply with new accounting standards and documenting conclusions in written format. In addition to completing tasks for Sarbanes-Oxley involving documentation of controls and procedures, this individual will also be tasked with analyzing current procedures employed by the accounting department and proposing ways to streamline such processes. Successful completion of these tasks will be demonstrated by completing agreed upon tasks in a quality manner in the amount of time assigned for such projects.
- Integration of acquired companies. As we acquire other companies, we need to integrate them into our processes and ensure that they are in compliance with GAAP and our close and reporting requirements. The Assistant Controller works with the acquired companies to perform this integration from an accounting operations perspective.
- Key member of Internal Financial Diligence Team. The Internal Financial Diligence Team performs financial diligence of potential acquisition targets. This work may include review of financial and accounting processes as well as performing GAAP reviews of their financials including adjustments to GAAP if required.
- Finance Liaison with IT. The Assistant Controller serves as the Finance Liaison with the IT department attending Gameplan meetings to discuss priority of requests and reporting back status to the rest of the finance department as well as serving as the Change Control Manager.
- Assist with SEC reporting process. Work closely with Director of Financial Reporting and Controller to compile SEC documents for review by internal and external parties such as CFO, Legal Counsel (internal and external), Audit Committee, and External Auditors. End result of this work will be the timely production of an accurate SEC document with minimal edits following presentation to upper management and external parties.
- Assist with annual budgeting process. Work closely with the CFO, Director of Financial Analysis and Senior Management to develop and compile budgeting templates and perform analyses. End result of this work will be the timely production of the annual budget including analyses comparing the budget to prior periods and business trends.
- Other special projects. This individual will be assigned special projects such as coordinating tax requirements, working with other areas of the business to improve accounting operations and financial system optimization projects. Successful completion of these tasks will be demonstrated by completing agreed upon tasks in a quality manner in the amount of time assigned for such projects.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA
- Background should include at least 3 years working for a Big 4 public accounting firm or another major firm with a minimum of 7 years of overall work experience. It is preferred that this individual has also worked outside of a public accounting firm for at least 4 years.
- Strong background in SEC reporting is required including either heavy experience with multiple SEC clients while working in public accounting or currently responsible for producing SEC documents with a public company. Knowledge of technical accounting pronouncements in areas such as FAS 123R, capitalized software costs and acquisition related topics is highly preferred. Good working knowledge of a large accounting software package (the Company uses Peoplesoft) and a report writer is also desired.
- Effective written and communication skills are a must. This person will be writing accounting research memos and assisting with the preparation of SEC documents on a regular basis and must be able to effectively and efficiently document findings and complete tasks. Verbal communication skills also must be strong as this person will be working with accounting staff and various levels of management on a regular basis on accounting topics.
- Needs to be willing and able to take on a leadership role within the accounting department immediately. Will include supervising the corporate accounting team and accounts payable as well as collaborating with 5 to 10 people on nearly a daily basis to ensure that objectives are met. This position reports to the Vice President, Corporate Controller.
- Ability to work well in a deadline oriented environment with the willingness to work extended hours if necessary.
