Admissions requirements

Master of arts

Admission to the master of arts program is open to applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized international institution of higher education. The admission decision is based upon the following:

1. A grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in the major field of study and in all subsequent graduate work. Under special circumstances, a candidate with an extensive  work history or other overriding qualifications may be admitted with a slightly lower G.P.A.

2. An interview with the Director of the Department of Graduate Psychology and Counseling or a member of the faculty, if deemed necessary.

3. A completed application detailing personal and professional goals and reasons for pursuing graduate study.

4. Three professional recommendations, one of which should be from a person qualified to evaluate clinical potential.

5. A minimum TOEFL score of 500 for applicants whose native language is not 
English.

6. Applicants seeking admission to one of the applied psychology tracks—clinical psychology or counseling psychology—must hold an undergraduate degree in psychology or have completed a minimum of 12 prior credits in psychology prior to acceptance. In certain circumstances, exceptional applicants may be granted conditional acceptance-- with full acceptance contingent upon the completion of 12 preparatory credits of psychology coursework. Preparatory courses are offered through the Department of Graduate Psychology and Counseling and can be accessed by contacting the Director at our administrative office at (802)-257-9411.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study

Admission to the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study is open to applicants who hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized international institution of higher education. The admission decision is based upon the following:

1. A grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in all prior graduate work. Under special circumstances, a candidate with an extensive work history or other overriding qualifications may be admitted with a slightly lower G.P.A.

2. An interview with the Director or the Department of Graduate Psychology or Counseling or a member of the faculty, if deemed necessary.

3. A completed application detailing personal and professional goals and reasons for pursuing post-graduate graduate study.

4. Three professional recommendations, one of which should be from a person qualified to evaluate clinical potential.

5. A minimum TOEFL score of 500 for applicants whose native language is not English.

6. Applicants seeking admission to one of the applied psychology tracks—clinical psychology or counseling psychology—must hold an master’s degree in psychology or closely related field as deemed acceptable by the Admission’s Committee. . In certain circumstances, exceptional applicants may be granted acceptance without possessing an earned master’s in psychology or closely related field with the stipulation that additional preparatory post-master’s credits will need to be taken during the period of enrollment.
