Admissions criteria
To be admitted to the M.Ed. program, you must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in the liberal arts or sciences. You must also demonstrate:
readiness to undertake independent study;
competence in the use of information and communication technologies;
strong interest and clearly formed purposes in the field of education as evidenced by the application essay;
and potential to successfully pursue graduate study, as evidenced by your academic record and three letters of reference.
Application materials
You may request an application form to be sent by mail, or access the application form online. To be considered for admission, you must submit the following:
Essay--The essay is an important part of your application and should demonstrate your interests and goals in the program as well as graduate-level writing abilities.
Three letters of recommendation— these must be sent directly from the recommender to your admissions representative. The guidelines for recommenders are found on the back of the application. Please feel free to contact the admissions counselor for assistance in the application process.
Official transcripts sent from the college or university where you earned your bachelor’s degree.
Vermont Only: Praxis scores: Please include, or have sent to us, copies of your PRAXIS I scores and, for those to whom it applies (candidates in Art Education, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, secondary English, Math, Science, and Social Studies), your PRAXIS II score reports. The following assessments may be submitted as alternatives to the PRAXIS I.
Vermont Only: Scores from the GRE or SAT: a total score of 1100 with a minimum of 500 Verbal/English and 500 Math/Quantitative. You can also submit ACT scores: a minimum Verbal/English score of 22 and a minimum Math/Quantitative score of 22. Vermont Only: All candidates for secondary licensure must also have completed a major in the discipline they wish to teach. If you are changing fields or have not yet completed the appropriate major, contact the M.Ed. program. We will be happy to help you assess what is needed and to suggest options for completing the major.
